California Athlete Agent Laws and Regulations

Athlete agents operating in California are subject to California Business and Professions Code Sections 18895 to 18898.97, also known as the Miller-Ayala Athlete Agents Act. The Athlete Agents Act is named after Assembly Member Gary Miller and Senator Ruben Ayala, the authors of the legslation that compose the Act. Two bills combined to make up the act, Assembly Bill 1987 and Senate Bill 1401. The Miller-Ayala Athlete Agent Act was signed into law in 1996, and was later amended in 1997, 1999, and 2004.

The Athlete Agents Act has five articles:

Registration as an Athlete Agent

Section 18896 of the California Business and Profession code states that "prior to engaging in or carrying on the business of athlete agent", each athlete agent must register and file certain specified information with the Secretary of State.
